The opening chapter · Official ASN replays

A canvas at Lyttelton. A dead heat at Picton.

Fifteen races launch the ASN rowing archive. Simpson wins the youth-sculls final by a canvas; Wellington’s two senior-fours crews share first at Picton. The club ledger starts here.

Four rowers and a coxswain cross a harbour in a wooden shell, with spectators, sailing boats and waterfront buildings beyond.
Oars on the harbour

A sporting holiday, in ink.

Wooden shells, working oars and spectators along the waterfront: ASN’s rowing chapter now has its own illustrated front page.

The stories and records below cover the Lyttelton and Picton replays, including the canvas finish and shared senior-fours honours.

Original ASN editorial illustration in the style of a 1900 newspaper engraving. This scene does not identify a real crew, venue or documented race moment.

Archive standard: Rowing owns the permanent record. Swing Swing Together is retained as engine provenance; canonical results, club honours and historical context remain engine-neutral.

Finals, heats & shared honours
Lyttelton · Youths’ single sculls

Simpson turns a heat second into a final victory.

G. Simpson · CBC finishes second to A. Olliver · LRC in the opening youth-sculls heat, then wins the final by a canvas over E. C. Brown · LRC. Olliver is third in the final and A. Driscoll · CBC fourth. The final, not the heat, supplies the category winner for the ASN record book.

Lyttelton’s other canvas finish belongs to C. Neil · CARC in the single sculls with coxswain, ahead of R. F. Crosbie · CARC. Across the programme, ten final categories and two qualifying heats produce twelve recorded races.

Picton · Senior fours

Wellington’s two crews share the senior honours.

Neither Wellington entry stands alone at the top of the Picton senior-fours result. Wellington Rowing Club No. 1 and No. 2 finish in a dead heat for first. The archive keeps both entries and the shared outcome; this is one completed category, not two races.

Star Boating Club wins the maiden fours by 1½ lengths over Wellington Rowing Club. Wellington takes the junior fours by one length over Nelson Rowing Club. These three finals give Picton its opening ASN club-results ledger.

The world behind the regattas

Historical context
Historical setting

One holiday, many kinds of race

The Star’s Lyttelton report documents a New Year aquatic gathering that included rowing, sailing and shore attractions. ASN’s adopted rowing scope selects ten club categories from that programme. Ships’ boats are excluded from the recorded club archive.

Historical setting

Club rivalry at Picton

The Evening Post’s Picton report provides the club entries behind the maiden, senior and junior fours. Those historical fields anchor ASN’s reconstruction. The unopposed junior-sculls row-over is retained as source context only and is not added as a fourth replay victory.

ASN category honours

The first recorded ASN winner in each adopted final category. Heat winners remain race results and are not counted again as category honours. Club codes and provisional entry labels are retained exactly; individual athlete career identities remain unassigned.
